The Lower Malwathu Oya Multisector Development Project is a significant initiative undertaken by the Ministry of Irrigation in Sri Lanka. The project aims to enhance water resource management, improve agricultural productivity, and support overall socio-economic development in the region surrounding the Malwathu Oya River. This project is vital for addressing water scarcity issues and promoting sustainable development in the area.
At the core of the project is the construction of a 3.6-kilometer dam with a maximum height of 23 meters, forming a reservoir with a capacity of 10 million cubic meters. This reservoir is designed to secure a reliable water supply for both irrigation and domestic use, covering an extensive area of 13,225 hectares. The project also includes crucial infrastructure like a river outlet for controlled water release and a power intake facility, which will support local energy needs.
Beyond water management, the project will have a profound impact on regional development. It will directly benefit 12 villages by enhancing infrastructure and improving access to resources. The construction and upgrading of 1,053 kilometers of roads will further enhance connectivity, boosting economic activity and improving the quality of life for local residents. However, the development will require clearing 4.68 square kilometers of forest land, with measures in place to manage and mitigate environmental impacts.
MCB’s role is pivotal in this initiative, particularly through the preparation of Initial Environmental Examinations (IEE) reports and other environmental assessments. These evaluations ensure that the project adheres to stringent environmental standards, promoting sustainable development while minimizing ecological disruption.
Overall, the Lower Malwathu Oya Multisector Development Project is set to provide lasting benefits to the region by improving water security, enhancing agricultural output, and providing critical flood control, all while fostering sustainable economic growth in Sri Lanka.
